Athletics

Thomas Sumter Academy’s athletic program is an integral part of our efforts to develop well-rounded students.  Athletics play a big part in the school’s overall pride and spirit.  All students are encouraged to participate in the athletic events as either a participant or a spectator.  A qualified coaching staff is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals for success on and off the athletic fields.

Strength and Conditioning Program

A seventh period class has been established for Varsity athletes to lift weights and participate in speed and quickness exercises to encourage strength, speed, and desire.  Most of our Varsity coaches assist in this training and special attention is given to each grade level starting with Middle School.

 Fall Sports

Football
Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity teams are available to boys in grades 7th–12th. Normally students below 10th Grade participate at the JV level; however, 9th Graders with exceptional talents may play at the Varsity level. Emphasis at all levels is on teaching fundamentals, self-discipline, and commitment.  Approximately 10 games are scheduled (eight or nine for JV) and regular season is followed by playoffs at the Varsity level. A B-Team program is available for 5th-7th  Grade boys.

Girls Volleyball
The Varsity Volleyball team is open to girls in grades 7th-12th  Practices begin in August and matches are held in September and October. The Varsity team is involved in play-off competition after the completion of the regular season.

Girls Tennis
Tennis is available for our female students starting in 5th Grade.  The JV team gives girls with little experience time to build their skills as they move through Middle School.  The Varsity team is available for the girls with advanced skills prior to the start of the season.  Both teams compete with other independent schools and play home matches in Sumter at the Palmetto Tennis Center.  Practice is held at the Palmetto Tennis Center as well.

Cross Country
Students practice cross country running The Hill.  This sport is open to students in grades 6th-12th.

Swimming
The Swim Team practices at the Sumter YMCA and attends meets there and throughout the state.  Competing with the TSA Swim Team are students from 6th-12th Grades.  Meets are typically held on weekends, but occasionally during the week.  Students attend the State Meet at the end of the season.
